Three miles from my home in upper Manhattan, the Bronx Zoo and New York Botanical Garden are tempting Father’s Day destinations. But this year I’ll give them a second thought — both city-owned institutions are fighting improvements to the bus route my family and I ride to reach them.

Late last month, senior officials at both the zoo and garden joined five other leaders of major institutions that are based in the Bronx and signed a private letter to Mayor Adams. Shamelessly, they invited the mayor to dine with them and hear their opposition to better bus service on Fordham

The Montgomery Botanical Gardens at Oak Park is growing by 2 acres, and garden officials have big plans for the area.

The new strip of land will become home to a historic Montgomery fountain that once sat in front of a Montgomery building that was being renovated. The city saved the fountain and gifted it to the garden.

A Japanese maple garden is also planned for the space, said Cathy Maddox, the Montgomery Botanical Gardens Board of Directors president. A donor has promised to provide the Japanese maples needed for the project.

Officials also will install a pedestrian entrance to

On a sunny Sunday morning in June, I found myself sitting on a yoga mat in UBC’s Botanical Gardens. After rushing to the gardens because of an unknown half-marathon starting on campus, I immediately felt a sensation of calm fall over me as the noise of cars stopped, being replaced by the sound of a stream as I began to walk through the blooming gardens.

Once at the lawn and sitting on my yoga mat, I was surrounded by other university students, community members and a few kids as a yoga instructor began taking us through a relaxing and restorative

EAST LANSING — A seven-acre garden at Michigan State University is in a slightly different location than before but still emphasizes biodiversity and conservation.

Alan Prather, interim director of MSU’s W.J. Beal Botanical Garden, said the garden started in 1873 after professor William Beal urged the university about the need for a garden. Prather said it started in a small plot of land on the north end of West Circle Drive, next to the College of Music.
