WOODBRIDGE – More choices for home renovations projects may be coming to town.
Floor and Decor Outlets of America is seeking preliminary and final major site plan approval to create a Floor & Decor retail store at 1550 St. Georges Ave., in the Avenel section, in the strip mall where a Kmart store closed last year.
The application is scheduled to be heard 6 p.m. Jan. 25 by the Woodbridge Planning Board.
Floor & Decor, which already has New Jersey stores in Elizabeth, Paramus, Moorestown, Toms River and Wayne, specializes in flooring, tile products and related accessories.
The property is one of three lots comprising a shopping center along the Woodbridge and Rahway border. The property is in a highway business district in which floor covering stores and large retail stores are permitted.
The proposal calls for the vacant building to be retrofitted for use as a Floor & Decor store.

The applicant is looking to remove about 2,000 square feet of the building facing Peach Street, where the Kmart garden center was located, and install a garbage compactor at the rear of the building, replace a 8-inch concrete slab in the loading area and enclose a building overhang in the loading area, creating a 1,200 square foot space, according to a public notice.
The applicant also is looking to extend an existing fence that surrounds to the garden center at the southern end of the building and install privacy slats and replace the existing rolling gate. New wall signs and temporary signs are planned along with the replacement of a sign panel on the freestanding sign on St. Georges Avenue, the public notice states.
In the existing parking lot the applicant is looking to create a customer pick up area on the southwestern side of the building, along with several customer pickup parking spaces, restriping some of the existing parking spaces and patching and repairing concrete curbs at the four landscape islands, according to the public notice.
